In addition to producing native trees for landscapes and restoration projects, several acres of Nagog Hill will be planted as permaculture fruit and nut groves.
These plantings will include species that require little to no pesticide use, such as:
- Paw paw
- Hybrid chestnut
- Hazelnut
- Blueberry
- Red mulberry
- Blackberry
Among these plants, paw paw stands out as one of North America’s most remarkable native fruit trees.
The paw paw produces large, tropical-tasting fruit and thrives in the forests of the eastern United States. Unlike many orchard fruits, paw paw trees experience very few pest or disease problems, and even deer tend to ignore them.
These plantings will eventually support a pick-your-own fruit experience, allowing visitors to enjoy fresh local fruit while learning about native food plants.
