White Dogwood

Flowering Dogwood (Cornus florida) is a beloved native understory tree, prized for its graceful form, layered branching, and stunning spring display of soft white to blush-toned bracts that float beneath the canopy. In autumn, its foliage turns rich shades of red and burgundy, complemented by bright red fruits that persist into early winter. Ecologically, Cornus florida is a powerhouse, supporting over 100 species of native Lepidoptera including the spring azure butterfly (Celastrina ladon) and several sphinx and moth species, while its nectar-rich blooms attract early-season pollinators. The nutrient-dense fruits are a critical food source for songbirds such as thrushes, vireos, and woodpeckers, as well as small mammals, and its dense branching structure provides valuable nesting and cover habitat. Ideal for woodland edges and shaded landscapes, flowering dogwood adds classic New England beauty while strengthening native biodiversity.
